Microk8s Control Plane API Load Balancing

Here’s a tale of how I came to load balance the Control Plane API of my 3 node microk8s cluster running on VM’s in my home lab.

  • Update your microk8s certs
    • Where the certs live
    • Verify your newly updated certs
  • Import this updated cert and CA to pfSense
  • Setup your Load Balancer
    • Use a dedicated IP address
  • Setup HAProxy
    • Create the HAProxy backend config
    • Create the HAProxy frontend config
  • Update your kubectl config
  • Test it
    • Start with curl
    • Go TLS deep
    • Does kubectl like it?
• Why?
• Other ideas I probably should have thought of
  • DNS round-robin
• Other things I tried that didn’t work
  • tcp load balancer with SSL Offloading (SSL pass-thru)
  • Setting the client certificates
  • Commenting out the certificate-authority-data entry in your kubectl config
  • Lots of HAProxy config trial and error
